Harvie Krumpet
Harvie Krumpet
Made by- Adam Elliot
Narrated by- Geoffrey Rush
the size of the models are the size of wine bottles because Adam Elliot had a twitch, and it would of been hard to do the detail if they were small.
The materials that Adam used were plasticine (for the arms) car bog (for the head and torso) and wood (for the set)
Harvie Krumpet was made in October 2001-January 2003 (editing finished in Mat 2003).
It has won an Academy Award for Best Short Animation and 40 more major awards!
Elloit does not use computers to improve the look of the animation because he hoped people can relate to Harvie's life and see a little bit of him in themselves.
"I want people to feel his pain."- he doesn't use computers so he can keep the same dark lighting through out.
advantages for a filmmaker that are using physical models as characters is that it makes it look real and they can use real props for the animated characters to use. Also it makes it look more realistic.
The disadvantages of using physical models to tell a story is they can get damaged or broken or even lost and have to be made again or replaced, which will also take up valuable time.
Elliot's tremor contributed to the style of his animation to make an organic feel 'chunky-wonky' style that fed itno his style. the characters look like that because of his disorder.

What is limited animaiton?
Limited animation is when a scene or an animation is repeated again through the animation itself.
For example: in Yogi Bear's Big Break
The cars are repeated, when coming in to the 'Jellystone Park' and they go past Yogi Bear and Boo Boo Bear, the cars go round in circles in and out of the scene.
Hanna-Barbera used limited animation allot because it was cheap to do and so it saved them money and time to make the animation.
I tried the limited animation with my friend Dek with a ball going up and down, showing it repeating itself again and again, I only had to film it once going up and down then all I and to do after that was copy and pasted the same images that I took to make the video so it would repeated itself again and again and I could of still copy and pasted the images and make the video longer if I wanted to but I only wanted to show that i could do it and a tester to find if it would work or not in an animation.
And this is our results:

Sweeny Todd-Tim Burton
This is truly the closest film he has made that suites his way of making films, all his films cannot top this movie as Sweeny Todd has the most things that Tim Burton is known for, for example:
- the characters have dark circles around their eyes
- it a musical (some of his animations are musical)
- the story is dark
- very Gothic
- scary, as it's bloody and gruesome
- depressing
- deadly
- even at the happy parts of the movie is still sad looking
- and evil

This is made by Tim Burton, even in a cartoon and computer animation, he uses the same type of style, if you can see it's dark around the eyes, its's scary, sad and so un-life like, and very sharp aswell.
How is this animation typical of Tim Burton's style?
It's very typical, as Tim Burton has put in the dark and scary looking features on the face, but this is actually one of his animation that at first time seeing it, you can't really recognise it's by him as most of his work is animation on humans that are Gothic in their way or very dead. But it links in with the others he has made- they are miserable, scary, sad and depressing in it's own based-on-story way. What's different about this is that Burton's animations are usually made from clay, this is computerised and you can tell very clearly, the picture is like what you see in a virtual game but in a clearer version but you can still tell the difference. This is not really in common with the animation Vincent at all because Vincent is from clay and it's a short animation while Nine is a movie and like i said again, it's made on a computer.
The link-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnoJecu9e7c
This video I think is very good, it's called Vincent and its made by Tim Burton with the help from Rick Heinrichs.
I like this video because it's very Gothic and dark, I like the story of a little boy who wants to be someone else who is proud and famous in a way which is Vincent Price, but he is Vincent Maloy, having imaginations of evil experiments, it reminds me of when I was little when I wanted to draw very evil things, and I have in a way.
I think the short film would be better if it was upgraded shall I say, so its clearer to see and clearer to hear.
Maybe make another short film as a sequel to it, to give it more thought in the video. Maybe a lot of people might like it if it was found out more, but this was the first time I've ever heard of it.
Tim Burton uses the same type of style on most of his films that he's done when it comes to animation. They are usually dark, Gothic, sad, very dramatic look on the features of the face and the body of the character, mostly in clay and weird and unusual looks to the story or film, that's what I like about Tim Burton, as his animations are so different to any other animation films that you see in the movies. You can tell straight away when you see the animation (Vincent) you can tell it's made by Tim Burton.
Just like the other animations he's done, they all have the same effect:
Nightmare Before Christmas-

Corpse Bride-

And many more.....
Vincent

"They blend terrifyingly, dark with whimsical and cheerful styles in a way that had not been done before"
"Burton respects the adult and child audience" - (www.timburtoncollective.com)
What type of films influenced the visual styles?
- stop motion
- claymation
Influenced by Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas, taught Tim Burton to combine the really graphic look of two-dimensional picture.
German expressionist film-scary, deep eyed, freak horror.
What does Tim Burton say about the person who did the voice over?
"The films of Vincent Price spoke to me specifically for some reason" (www.awn.com)
What company did Tim Burton work with?
Walt Disney animation studios.....costing $60,000 (£38,795)...a low budget.
Who wrote the poem?
Edgar Allen Poe's story adapted by Tim Burton
What the director/producer said about 'Vincent'
"What taught Tim and me* is that you can combine the really graphic look of two-dimensional picture with something that works in three dimensions" *Rich Heinrichs
"When you're younger, things look bigger, you find your own mythology"
"This larger-than-life character who goes through a lot of torment" -Rich Heinrichs and Tim Burton
Where did Tim Burton get the idea for combining 2D and 3D animation?
Inspired by 3D models that Disney used to provide it's animators as reference material.

my really loooong poem
There were two lovers,
dreamed of days so far away,
but one day,
it tried to come,
just beneath the happy sun.
But one lover got swept away,
and carried long from the world of land,
where she couldn't hold him by the hand.
Days past,
weeks alone,
the lover didn't moan or groan,
only the Sun cried a while,
she told the Sun to have a smile.
But wait lover,
it will be too late,
when he comes back,
it's a change of date.
But she ignored and she didn't listen,
as her eyes fully glistened,
no matter how far,
no matter how long, our love is sacred and very strong,
as I remember the words he said.
Oh dear sweet Rosalie,
don't cry or shed,
tears of sadness,
tears of years,
that's past us long for the world of hears.
Hope is life,
and we make it right,
go through everything together,
go through life,
together for we are strong.
As the Sun cried again,
Rosalie sat lonely,
here,and then.
Sitting on the grass below,
leaning on a bed of stone,
she had faith,
she had hope,
Lied down gently all asleep,
where or when,
she'll wake again,
as she's in slumber very deep.
As again years have past,
but still asleep,
oh how it lasts.
Protected from danger,
in the distance a lonely stranger,
came walking by with tears in his eyes.
here you lie,
I am here now,
to comfort you,
from what you have all been through.
Lying gently,
very rested,
the stone next to her had a message,Rosalie thorn,
asleep alone,
waiting for lover,
forever and ever.
Oh my Rosalie,
as my world will fully cry.
Cradled her tight,
full of sorrow,
as if there was no tomorrow.
Full of tears,
on his face,
rocking her gently,
full of prays.
Wake up Rosalie,
have more life,
Kissed her on her very cold lips,
and as a miracle,
a move of her finger tips.
Opened eyed,
as she saw,
her forever lover,
all in awe.
My lover Austin,
your here with me,
the one I've missed,my dearly be.
You look tired,
have rest,
sweet heart Rosalie,
you and I to the west, for our kingdom awaits us.
will you marry me?
Knelt down with one knee,
proposed upon a small little thing,
a carved heart shaped,
a little ring.
Oh yes my dear,
to the heart,
forever a long time till death do us part,
even then we'll be together,
as always forever and ever.
There was two lovers,
quiet as a cloud,
Rosalie waited for 500 years,
through the valleys and the streams,
people knew,
about the forever two,
but the story is not what it seems,
for their love together,
are like shining beams,
on all who live their,
dreams.

I'm not very keen on Monty Python, its a bit lame and not funny and I don't get it at all, this was the only video I could find that didn't annoy me as much as the other videos, I don't even get the joke of this animation. The video of the 'Black Night' was okay because of the cutting arms bit (very gruesome! :D )
The going downstairs bit I think was too long, it made me want to get off the video and watch something else, its rough it looks hard and not nice...pretty sad. :(
I didn't like finding out about Monty Python as it's not my sort of thing or it's not that interesting to get me finding stuff about it. This would probably be the last thing on my mind if I had to find out about animation.
The good thing about this is one sort of animation as Monty Python created this with cut out photos and with a random mind. (not my sort of liking when it comes to randomness)
What is it about/ what happens?
Well it starts of with an animated guy in a room that looks quiet and he's writing or drawing the title for 'The Tales Of Sir Lancelot' then a massive thumping noise goes of in the background making him dodge and ruins a Caligrathy what looks to have taken a very long time to do. (Over the top a bit) The whole room shakes and moves every time you hear the thumping noise, and so the man goes and finds out what it is and he goes down a flight of stairs, very long (boarded me because it took too long) and half way down he falls but you don't see him fall and you hear a loud noise of objects falling and him making a scream. Then you see him at the bottom of the stairs going through a corridor through a door leading outside the castle he's in. Outside there is three clouds and a sun with legs jumping up and down, then he says to them 'stop that, stop that, go on clear off, go away, go away' then the clouds move out of the scene to the side, 'and you, clear off' he says then the sun goes down in the distance, and it ends with the joke of him saying 'uhh, bloody weather...' (tut tut)
How it's made:
They used cut out pictures and drawings and stuck them together or put movement on them to make an animation, they took loads and loads of pictures moving them a fraction at a time (i think) then it all came together with an animation of moving cut out pictures.
Describe the style of the animation:
It's old as the picture isn't clear and the sound. The video is dark, there's small lighting.
The style of the animation is very quirky, and sharp, there's no music in the background until the end of the video. Making it quite simple and straight forward.
How would this have been more difficult to make then that it would be to make now?
As we have more technology and equipment to use to make the animation better or change it in any ways we want today..but back then..it would of been hard and it would of probably taken longer time to make as they only had limited technology that can process the animation or video in the way they want to and to it's best...but if it was wanted better today..it would be changed with clearer picture, more lighting, more graphics or materials, it would have maybe put with special features like a blue-ray disc, maybe even add music in the background to get more people looking at it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ72fcHDUC8 -the video
I love this video from Oren Lavie. It must of taken ages to make this video, its very impressive, i know i could never do something like this. It keeps my attention when I watch it because there is so many creative things about it and you would want to know what's going to happen next...and its fun. What a great music video.
The lighting is mostly the same throughout the whole video except on two parts in the video when the colour of the sheet changes to a dark blue making it look like the girl is underwater then on a next bit where the is made to look like she's looking out of a window on the corner of the bed and this time the lighting changes to look like night time with only light shining on her and it blacks out for a second then it comes back on and blacks out again and comes back on giving the effect of a change of scene when every time it blacks out and the beat of the the song in the background fits with the black outs. On some bits of the video the music is quick and so the video goes quickly as well. Most of the colour that is used in the video is white, the girl is in white through the whole video, but the objects or things in the video are different colours except the clouds.
What is it about/What happens?
Its about a girl having a dream on a bed-perfectly fitted with the music as the music is describing what is happening in the video. The girl goes through different scenes with all sorts of things happening around her and to her, one minute she's walking then she's falling into the sea with socks made to look like fish. The video is an example of pixilation-something made to look like its created by pixies, the things happening in the video is what you wouldn't usually see happening in real life like someone flying.
The things they used to make the video:
One mattress
One angle
Pillows
All sorts of sheets
Clothes
Lamp
Shoes
A book
A mug
Two people - girl: Shir Shomron (actress) boy: Oren Lavie-himself (musician and director)
The people who did it and made it happen:
Michal Dayan-producer
Yuval and Merav Nathan-directors and animators
Eyal Landesman-still photographer
How it worked:
6 weeks of scripting
3 weeks of storyboarding in animatic
48 hours of shooting
2096 photos were shot
All the photos were time-lined to make a motion
January 2009- the video was uploaded to youtube having more than 13 million views!
Today there's videos or adverts just like it getting the idea of pictures put as an animation (pixilation).
December 2009-it was up for nomination in the Grammy Awards!
Also awarded for:
2010 Grammy Awards-nominated for best music video
L.A. Film Festival and SXSW
ANIMATOR 2010 International Animated Film Festival Poznan
And many more....
A year after its release, the artists have decided to break down the video back to its original 2096 still photos.
January 2010- Her Morning Elegance gallery opened

my favourite animation.x
this is my favourite animation EVER .
Its amazing how the person who created this type of animation took it to the next level of animation.WOW!!
our "creative and media" letter animation
How was it made?
(Techniques/materials)
We used pens, paper to make our drawings. We also used still photography cameras, we used a computer to upload our video with editing software and we did around 12 pictures on each letter, some of us had to do more as some of our ideas were big.
strengths
The drawings were clear. It fitted well, all together. The words we were trying to spell was CREATIVE AND MEDIA, ( i think it worked). It was colourful and friendly for everyone to see.
What have you learnt about animation?
Its really easy to do. The simpler, the better. Animation takes time. Animation can be made in all sorts, e.g. clay, drawn or computerised.
Weaknesses
The papers are at different angles. My "A" was not finished. There was things in the background that shouldnt be there.

What types of animation are there?
cartoon:(or regular animation)
<"Steamboat Willie" Winsor McCay did his own animation and it took him a really long time, about a year just to make a five minute animation.
computer:
<"Finding Nemo" Computer animation started 40 years ago when the first computer drawing system was created by General Motors and IBM. A well know computer animation company is Pixar. They are the makers of Finding Nemo, Toys Story, Monsters Inc and many more. Computer animation gets better and better as technology progresses over the years.

computer:

What is the 'persistence of vision' theory and what does it have to do with animation?
"Persistence of Vision" refers to the phenomenon where the retina retains an image for a brief split-second after the image was actually seen, and lends itself to animation by fostering the illusion of motion when we view images in closely-timed sequence to one another. We don't notice the fractional skips between images because that persistence fills in the momentary gap to make the motion seem seamless.which gives us a clearer picture on what we can see.
At what fps rate does the human eye see flickering?
I think the human eye sees flickering at 24 fps which is very visible.
(We actually see 16 frames per second, our brain moulds them into motion. But anything above 10 fps will appear as smooth motion. This is because it takes 1/16th of a second for picture to fade off the back of our eye.)
(We actually see 16 frames per second, our brain moulds them into motion. But anything above 10 fps will appear as smooth motion. This is because it takes 1/16th of a second for picture to fade off the back of our eye.)
what does animation mean?
display of sequence of images or 2-D or 3-D art work or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement.
